Project Summary
This project investigates functional macrophage diversity in the heart, focusing on cell ontogeny. P08 will decipher the relative contribution of recruited versus resident cardiac macrophages to healing of and electrical conduction in focal and global lesions after ischaemia/reperfusion injury and transverse aortic constriction, respectively. Based on novel pathomechanistic insight from animal models and human tissue cultures, it will distinguish beneficial from harmful effects that one or the other macrophage population may exert directly or indirectly via influencing neighbouring cardiomyocytes or other non-myocytes. As a result, the project aims to identify potential therapeutic targets for immune-modulation of lesion development.
